St. Thomas Announcements… August 16th—23rd

This Week’s Highlights ….

All Congregation and Leadership Team Members are invited…to the home of our Leadership Team chair on Friday at 6:00 p.m. for a potluck supper, followed by a visioning and planning meeting.  The meeting will continue on Saturday (8:30 a.m.—noon) at the church, in the sanctuary.  Please come either or both days as you are able and join in our planning for the coming year.

Sunday Worship Service:  All St. Thomas friends and families are invited to join us for worship with Pastor Jeremiah, at 10 a.m. on Sunday.  His message, “What are Spiritual Disciplines, Part 2” is based on 2 Peter 1: 3, 5-8 and Matthew 11:28-30. As they begin a new school year, we support our teachers and students with the Blessing of the Backpacks.  All are encouraged to bring their backpacks to the worship service for this annual school-year kick-off.  This Sunday’s service we’ll have the Village Vocal Chords with us to provide the special music.

Shekels for Shingles:  The exterior work on the parsonage roof is nearing completion but we still need to fix the parsonage family room ceiling that was damaged by the leaking roof.  And while work continues, the funds necessary to complete this project are still in short supply, so we continue to seek project specific donations to fund this project.  Be sure to memo your check for this project as you make these donations.

One way to support the roof replacement project and yet have a nice evening with friends and family is to participate in the Benefit Concert & Ice Cream Social which will take place Sunday, August 27th, at 7:00 p.m. The 20 time international award winning Village Vocal Chords chorus will present “Let’s Raise the Roof!”, a concert to benefit the parsonage roof repair followed by an ice cream social hosted by the UMW.  The suggested ticket donation is $10 with tickets available in the St. Thomas office or at the door the night of the concert.

Dining Out Group… will be meeting next Friday, August 25 at 6 pm at White Fence Farm (1376 Joliet Road – Romeoville).  Directions:  South on Route 53 passed I-55 and Business Park until you have to turn (Citgo station at the corner on right side of street) and go left.  The road changes into Joliet Road (Route 53 continues right at this light). The restaurant will be on the left.  The directions that come up through Google Maps tells you to go through the Business Park (most likely to make a right turn instead of a left turn in).  53 does back up through Lisle at that hour, Yackley/College/Werhli to Hobson or 75th is a good alternate and 355 at that hour may not be a good idea.  Let the church office know by 3 pm that day if you are planning to attend.  They do not take reservations and won’t seat until everyone has arrived.  We need to know a count when we get there.

Glen Ellyn Food Pantry:  August is our month to give extra support to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.  Food donations are appreciated, with a special request for peanut butter, jelly, brown or white rice, pasta, canned tuna and toilet paper. However, cash donations are encouraged, as those funds can provide more food since we can order food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.  Please make your check out to our church with GE Food Pantry on the item/memo line.

MS Ride in Wisconsin:  Thanks for your prayers and support for my multiple sclerosis fund-raiser ride. I joined over 1,400 riders on Aug. 5 and 6 for a grand bicycle tour between Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Madison Wisconsin. This year’s riding weather was nearly 10 degrees cooler than normal, so it was perfect for the riders. I heard that funds raised for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society totaled about $1.3 million. To honor my St. Thomas donors, I made a $545 matching contribution to the church.

St. Thomas Annual Rummage Sale  A HUGE thank you to the many folks who helped donate, sort and price, and who actually “manned/womened” the rummage sale last week.  Our anticipated receipts are around $3000.

Prayer Requests:  If you would like to add someone or be added yourself to our weekly prayer list, just email or call the St. Thomas office 630-469-1214.  This week we pray …

  • For healing and successful treatments for those dealing with health concerns and for those dealing with cancer.
  • For the caregivers, who help and support those needing their assistance.
  • For families who recently lost loved ones, that they may find comfort during this time of grieving.
  • For the St. Thomas congregation, praying that it will grow and thrive so that we may carry on our mission.
  • For racial healing and political reconciliation throughout our country.
  • For those dealing with the heartache of addictions, dementia and Alzheimer’s.
