St. Thomas Announcements…
Sept. 6th –13th
This Week’s Highlights ….
Sunday Worship Service: All St. Thomas friends and families are invited to join us for worship, at 10 a.m. on Sunday for our special “Friends and Neighbors Worship”, with members of the Ahmadiyya congregation from across the street joining us in this time of fellowship & worship. Please bring your friends and neighbors to this service as well, to share in Pastor Jeremiah’s message, “Who Is My Neighbor?” using the Luke 10:25-37 scripture lesson. Immediately following the worship service, we will have a light lunch to share with our guests. Entrées and beverages will be provided, please bring a salad or dessert to share.
And speaking of worship, if you would occasionally like to serve as liturgist for worship, we are setting up a calendar to assign liturgists to serve one Sunday every 3 or 4 months. Those who are interested are encouraged to attend the Worship Team meeting next Sunday immediately following worship. If you are unable to attend that meeting but would like to be included in this schedule, please let the church office know this week so we can include you in the schedule that begins October 1.
Shekels for Shingles: We continue to collect specially designated donations to help pay off the replacement of the parsonage roof as well as our repairs yet to come to replace the family room interior ceiling that was destroyed by the roof leakage. Thank you to all those who have given generously to meet this unexpected financial challenge. Please continue in prayer to see how you can help finalize this financial obligation.
UMW new year begins: The United Methodist Women begin their regular monthly meetings with a gathering at a member’s home at 1:30 on Monday, September 11. At that time, they will share a potluck appetizer and dessert snack as they discuss upcoming meetings, projects, and opportunities. All women are invited to participate.
Fall Bible Study: “Moses” A new Bible Study will begin next week, on Wednesday, September 13, Soup & Study at 6:00 p.m. and Thursday, September 14 at 1:30 p.m. This study uses Adam Hamilton’s book, Moses in which he retraces the life of Moses – from his rescue as a baby to the courts of Pharaoh, his Exodus out of Egypt, to his gazing on the Promised Land. Combining historical insights, archaeological data, and the biblical text, Hamilton explores how this reluctant prophet grew in his relationship with God, and how you can overcome your own hesitancy to act boldly for the Lord. If you plan to participate in either of these classes, please email the church office or sign the signup sheet on the ledge by September 3 so we can order you a book ($13).
Hurricane Harvey: One way to help… If you are still looking for a way to assist our “neighbors in Texas”, besides contributions to the American Red Cross and Midwest Mission Distribution Center, you can give to UMCOR’s relief and recovery efforts (Advance #901670) at umcor.org/donate. And, of course, your prayers are needed for those whose lives have been impacted by Harvey, including the families who have lost their homes, but also the early response teams, disaster coordinators and the many volunteers who are working tirelessly to provide relief.
Prayer Requests: If you would like to add someone or be added yourself to our weekly prayer list, just email or call the St. Thomas office 630-469-1214. This week we pray …
- For healing and successful treatments for those dealing with health concerns and for those dealing specifically with cancer.
- For the caregivers, who help and support those needing their assistance.
- For families who recently lost loved ones, that they may find comfort during this time of grieving.
- For the St. Thomas congregation, praying that it will grow and thrive so that we may carry on our mission.
- For racial healing and political reconciliation throughout our country.
- For those dealing with the heartache of addictions, dementia and Alzheimer’s.
- For those dealing with natural disasters in their home states: Texas and Louisiana (Hurricane Harvey), Montana (wild fires), Florida and the US east coast (Hurricane Irma), and others.
