 St. Thomas Announcements… Nov. 15th – 29th

 This Week’s Highlights ….

From the Leadership Team:  Thanks to those who attended the meeting after Worship on November 12.  Rev Dick Wisdom, our Northern IL Conference District Superintendent, answered questions and helped us understand our tenuous situation.  Because we have a 1.2 million dollar debt (combination of the new addition and the parsonage) to pay and because we have lost members—not increased membership—we are having great difficulty paying our mortgage, repairs for the parsonage and bills for keeping our building in good shape.  The congregation has been family for many of us and so many of us are having difficulty facing the fact that we cannot continue in this present state.  At this point, we have had to take money from designated funds in order to pay our bills.

As we talked with Rev Wisdom, he and the Conference see the best solution for us to be to merging with our “mother church,” First United Methodist Church in Glen Ellyn.  First Church sponsored the beginning of St Thomas UMC over 50 years ago and they are ready to welcome us back into their family.  If we are able to sustain our church for 4 1/2 more months, we would end Worship here at St Thomas UMC on Easter Sunday, April 1.

The Leadership Team will meet this Saturday, November 18, 8:00 a.m. to talk through some more details.  Please know that any of you are welcome to come to the meeting and help us find a positive way to continue our faith journey.

Nov. 17:  Dining Out Group:  Everyone is welcome to join us as we will be meeting next Friday, November 17th at 6 pm at Colonial Cafe, 8 W. Gartner Road in Naperville.  Please let the church office know by 3 pm that day if you are planning to join us. Hope to see you there.

Nov. 19:  Sunday Worship Service:  Plan now to join us at 10:00 a.m. this Sunday for Thanksgiving worship. Pastor Jeremiah’s message this week is, “Dreaming Beyond,” with scripture readings from Psalm 100; Philippians 1:1-11.  There will be no confirmation class this Sunday, Nov. 19, so the confirmands can attend our annual Thanksgiving Dinner.  Confirmation class will meet instead at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17 here at the church for dinner and study.

Nov. 19:  St. Thomas Annual Thanksgiving Dinner:  As is our custom, we will join with the Horeb Congregation this Sunday, November 19, at 4:00 for our Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner.  Please bring friends and neighbors, a dish to share and join in this fellowship opportunity.  The Hanging of the Greens will NOT take place following this dinner, as Pastor Jeremiah will be including that in our November 26 beginning of advent worship as follows…

Nov. 26:  Hanging of the Greens worship service:  Next Sunday, November 26, Pastor Jeremiah is planning a special “Hanging of the Greens worship service” during which we will decorate the sanctuary for Advent, celebrating the meaning of each decoration as it is put in place.  As part of that service we are asking each family (or individuals in the family if you would prefer) to “loan” the church an ornament that has a special meaning to you.  As you hang it on the Christmas tree we will ask you to give a brief explanation of why this ornament has special meaning to you and your family.  All ornaments will be returned to you following the advent season.

Nov. 20 & 21:  Holiday Office Hours:  To allow our staff to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with their families, the St. Thomas office will be open next week on Monday and Tuesday (Nov.20 & 21) and then will close until Sunday, Nov. 26.

The Annual Pecan Fundraiser for UMW is taking place now.  The pecans should have arrived by Sunday, November 19.  Price of a 16 oz pkg is $10.50.  See the church office to get your supply for your holiday baking needs.

Attention all Cooks:  Just a reminder that we are looking for volunteers to serve lunch to our confirmation class (8 people, including teachers) each Sunday immediately following worship.  And if cooking is not your thing, you can provide financial support for them to go to McDonald’s or to order pizza.  Please sign-up on the ledge.

Nov. 29/30 – Dec. 20/21:  Advent Bible Study:  The next Bible Study will be our Advent Study, using the book Down to Earth by Mike Slaughter.  As is our custom, there will be two sessions of this study, one on Wednesday evenings beginning Nov. 29, from 6:00 – 7:30 as the Soup and Study class, and one on Thursday afternoons, starting Nov. 30, from 1:30 – 3:00.  The study books have arrived and are in the office, ready for pickup, for a cost of $12.00.

Prayer Requests:  If you would like to add someone or be added yourself to our weekly prayer list, just email or call the St. Thomas office 630-469-1214.  This week we pray …

  • For healing and successful treatments for those dealing with health concerns and specifically for those dealing with cancer.
  • For the caregivers, who help and support those needing their assistance.
  • For these dealing with the loss of a loved-one.
  • For the St. Thomas congregation, praying that it will grow and thrive so that we may carry on our mission.
  • For racial healing and political reconciliation throughout our country.
  • For those dealing with the heartache of addictions, dementia and Alzheimer’s.
  • For those dealing with natural disasters in their home states.
